CW Ranks the Batsmen

CW's Ranking of the Top 25 Batsmen of All-Time

1. Don Bradman
2. Jack Hobbs
3. Garry Sobers
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Viv Richards
6. WG Grace
7. Wally Hammond
8. Brian Lara
9. Greg Chappell
10. Len Hutton
11. George Headley
12. Sunil Gavaskar
13. Herbert Sutcliffe
14. Ranji
15. Ricky Ponting
16. Victor Trumper
17. Everton Weekes
18. Graeme Pollock
19. Javed Miandad
20. Allan Border
21. Dennis Compton
22. Barry Richards
23. Clyde Walcott
24. Ken Barrington
25. Steve Waugh

Biggest stunners and snubs? WG didn't even make the list last time and Pollock nearly cracked the top 10 IIRC. Don't understand how Merchant got no votes despite his legendary FC record. Dravid and Waugh took a fall and Ponting moved up as well, somewhat expected.

No individual will agree with that list, simply because it has been a collective decision...I also would have thrown 2-3 names out of that list, thrown in 2-3 names in their place, and would have changed the order just a bit...

But I must say that among all the batsmen's lists I have seen so far [Bfrom ranking systems[/B] (both statistical and non-statistical) I agree with this one the most...I can say this without doubt especially after the inclusion of the last 4 names, and I like this list slightly more than the bowlers' list...

And I have said this before - kudos to adharcric for introducing this ranking system...And congratulations to the members of CW...

Really enjoyed it too. Isn't it funny though how someone can shoot up the rankings so much (Grace) without lifting a bat. Obviously different people selecting.

Out of interest, when was the last top 25 done?

So based on the Batsman and Bowler lists we can piece together an Australian team consisting of:

Trumper
xxx
Bradman
Chappell
Ponting
Border
xxx
Warne
Lillee
O'Reilly
McGrath

Reserves: Waugh, Lindwall, Grimmett, Davidson, Miller.

Only the other opener spot and the keeper spot to fill.

I was basing the team purely on the rankings given in these lists, but yes, I agree with you.

Trumper
Hayden
Bradman
Chappell G
Ponting
Miller
Gilchrist
O'Reilly
Warne
Lillee
McGrath

Make up my all time Aus team. Though I tend to swap out O'Reilly for Davidson, Lindwall or Grimmett depending on my mood. Occasionally I even drop ponting for Border and his captaincy.

I think I like this batsmen list even more than the one for bowlers - it's turned out really well. And as I said in the bowlers thread, thanks to Adharcric for his hard work on this.

This is almost identical to the all-time XI that would be selected from Christopher Martin-Jenkins' list. The only two changes are that Hammond would replace Tendulkar and Warne would come in for Murali.

Food for thought.
