Barbados VS. Guyana at Kaiser Sports Club
Guyana emerged regional champions yesterday as they beat Barbados to win the 2003 Red Stripe Bowl. Chasing just 184 to win, the defending champions fell short by 28 runs as they collapsed to the spin of Guyana.
Batting first, Chattergoon and Ramdass (37) batted well before for 45 the former was out caught by Dwayne Smith off the bowling of Wilkerson for 24. Sarwan joined Ramdass and the two took the score to 82, with Sarwan becoming the only batsman to score 200+ runs in this year's competition. The West Indies vice-captain perished for 22 of 33 balls including three (3) fours. Just 22 runs later, Ramdass picked out Smith on the fine-leg boundary.
Captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul (19) and Narsingh Deonarine (0) were dismissed by Ian Bradshaw off consecutive balls to leave Guyana struggling at 111/5. Lennox Cush then came to the crease and batted aggressively in top-scoring with 41 off 50 balls. He hit a four and two (2) sixes in the innings and added 46 runs with Mahendra Nagamootoo (17) for the sixth wicket. Upon Nagamootoo's departure to Pedro Collins, Neil Garrell came to the crease and put on a further 40 runs with Cush before Collymore shattered Cush's stumps - 197/7.
McGarrell was eventually run out for 25 off 24 balls (three (3) fours) as he helped Guyana become the first team in the final four to reach 200 - 212/9. Bradshaw finished with an impressive 3/37 with Pedro Collins claiming 2/37. West Indies bowlers Collymore (1/40), Drakes (0/37) and Hurley (1/31) did moderate damage between them.
In the Bajan reply Kurt Wilkinson (1) provided Griffith with an early wicket before Dwayne Smith (29 off 18 balls; four fours and one six) and Sherwin Campbell (33) took the score to 41. Griffith then scattered Smith's stumps. Floyd Reifer batted sensibly with Campbell and they took the score to 76 when the former West Indies opener was run out. Campbell's innings took 48 balls to compile and included five (5) fours.
Chanderpaul picked up the catches to dismiss Ryan Hinds (9) and Reifer (19) to put Barbados in a difficult position at 100/5 in 26 overs. At this point the rains came down and forced play to be halted. When play resumed, Barbados need 84 runs off 11 overs to win. They faced early setbacks as big-hitter Ryan Hurley (4) and Vasbert Drakes (7) were soon dismissed - 124/7.
Captain Courtney Browne (22) and Pedro Collins, like Drakes, perished via the runout route and Collymore was bowled for 8. Barbados finished on 156 all out from 36 overs, to lose the Cup to Guyana. Griffith ended with 2/51 and Neil McGarrell took 3/45.
Cush won the Man of the Match performance after he bowled economically (5-0-9-1) to accompany his batting heroics.
In the Red Stripe Bowl special prizes, Ramnaresh Sarwan (202 runs and 6 wickets) won the best batsman and allrounder awards; Mahendra Nagamootoo (13 wickets) won the best bowler prize; and Courtney Browne was named best wicketkeeper.
