Red Stripe Bowl : Day 10

Monday, October 13 2003

ZONE A

Trinidad and Tobago VS. Jamaica

With both teams already heading to the semi-finals, today's clash would only determine the final four matchups for each team. With that at the back of his mind, Daren Ganga batted with steely resolve for Trinidad and Tobago, who managed to find defeat despite being at 199/6 chasing 210 for victory.

Earlier Lara played an entertaining cameo of 24 off 18 balls before he was bowled leg-stump by 19-year-old Jerome Taylor. Bravo soon followed without scoring and then Imran Jan, to leave T&T struggling at 47/4. However Daren Ganga remained and continued to bat sensibly in partnership with young big-hitting Aneil Kanhai (39) as the two took the score to 127 before Breese dismissed the latter.

Shazam Babwah came to the crease with memories of his unbeaten hundred against the Windwards just a couple of days ago. With that confidence he proceeded to smash the Jamaican bowling about for his 45 runs before he was dismissed. With that dismissal as his cue, Ganga decided to take the attack to the bowling, but was brilliantly caught and bowled by Gareth Breese in his attempts. He played superbly for 71. At this point the score stood at 199/7, chasing just 211 for victory. Next to go was Dave Mohammed who was caught off Gayle playing a premeditated shot - 203/8.

Now it was up to Dinanath Ramnarine and Reyad Emrit to win the game. Ricardo Powell removed Reyad Emrit with a wicket-maiden as Trinbagonian hearts sunk further - 204/9, 12 balls left. Ramnarine lapped a ball down to the fine leg boundary to take the score to 208/9 - 3 needed. Two balls later, Ramnarine went for a big shot and found himself bowled to leave his team all out for 208. Trinidad and Tobago managed to lose 4 wickets for 9 runs to collapse to defeat.

When Jamaica batted, they never really got going. Chris Gayle (15), Wavell Hinds (22), Marlon Samuels (13), Robert Samuels (7) and Ricardo Powell (6) all failed to contribute significantly as Dave Mohammed (3/42) finished with the best of the T&T figures. It was left up to the lower order for a rebuilding act, with Carlton Baugh jr. and Dave Bernard jr. each getting 34 as the Jamaicans reached 210/9 at the close of their innings.

The victory for Jamaica means that they will play Guyana in the semi-finals, while Trinidad and Tobago will play defending champions Barbados.

Jamaica - 210/9 (50 overs)
(Dave Bernard 34, Carlton Baugh 34, Darren Powell 22 not out, Wavell Hinds 22, Gareth Breese 21)
(Dave Mohamed 3-42 [10], Dinanath Ramnarine 3-47 [10])
Trinidad and Tobago - 208 ao (48.4 overs)
(Daren Ganga 71, Shazam Babwah 45, Aneil Kanhai 39, Brian Lara 24)
(Chris Gayle 3/37 [4], Gareth Breese 2/42, Daren Powell 2/37, Jerome Taylor 2/41)

ZONE B

Antigua and Barbuda VS. Guyana

Guyana reached 185/6 to defeat Antigua and Barbuda and qualify for the 2003 Red Stripe Bowl semi-finals. A good knock of 64 from Ramnaresh Sarwan and a good 39 from Chanderpaul were the basis of Guyana's batting performance. Sarwan added 52 with Ryan Ramdass (33) after Guyana slumped to 9/2. The West Indies vice-captain then teamed up with Guyana captain Chanderpaul to add a further 83 runs for the fourth wicket.

Sent in to bat, Antigua and Barbuda managed to get 181 runs all out. The top-scorer of the innings proved to be the resilient West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman, Ridley Jacobs, who got to 39 not out. His captain Sylvester Joseph (34) and Ian Tittle (28) both gave support, but ultimately, their team perished to the Guyanese spin.

Ramnaresh Sarwan (2/29) and Mahendra Nagamootoo (2/27) exercised their leg-spin to good effect as they shared 4 wickets. Pace bowler Rayon Griffith also did very well, with 2 wickets for 25 runs.

Antigua and Barbuda miss out on the semi-finals, finishing 1 point behind Guyana and Barbados.

Antigua & Barbuda - 181 ao (49.4 overs)
(Ridley Jacobs 39 not out, Sylvester Joseph 34, Ian Tittle 28)
(Rayon Griffith 2-25 [5], Mahendra Nagamootoo 2-27 [10], Ramnaresh Sarwan 2-29 [10])
Guyana - 185/6 (47.2 overs)
(Ramnaresh Sarwan 64, Shivnarine Chanderpaul 39, Ryan Ramdass 33)
(Anthony Lake 2/36 [10], Kerry Jeremy 1/30 [8])
