Johnson for Anderson

Tuesday, September 30 2003

Fast bowler Richard Johnson has been called up to the England Test squad as a replacement for the injured James Anderson. Johnson, who took 6/33 on debut against Zimbabwe this year, fell out of contention for selection due to injury after participating in the Natwest series which followed the Zimbabwe Test series.

Johnson beats out closest contenders, James Kirtley and Robert Croft for a Test slot. Kirtley will stay at home to recover from a shin injury in hope that he will be fit for the ODI series. Croft has been ignored despite Ashley Giles being the only specialist spin option in the England squad.

The 1st Test begins on October 21st in Dhaka.
