Sussex Coup: Ward Signs

Wednesday, October 1 2003

Sussex has completed this season's biggest transfer to date, signing former England batsman Ian Ward to a four-year deal with the county champions.

Ward, a veteran of 5 Tests for England, was being chased by a number of counties including the struggling Somerset, who had also offered him the captaincy.

He joins a strong batting line-up, made up of few starts but all capable players - Richard Montgomery, Murray Goodwin, Chris Adams and Tony Cottey.

The signing also adds depth to Sussex's limited opening batsman stocks after having to open with Goodwin since he joined the county in 2001.

Meanwhile, seamers Billy Taylor and Shaun Rashid have been granted releases by the champions.
