1st Test: Martyn Recalled

Wednesday, October 1 2003

Dependable middle-order batsman Damien Martyn has been recalled to the Australian Test squad following a finger injury that forced him to miss the entire tour of the Caribbean and home Test series against Bangladesh.

His recall highlights the importance of the Western Australian batsman to the side, and it now indicated that he is an automatic selection since his recall in 2001.

Martin Love has missed out on selection in the expanded 13-man squad, left out in favour of Martyn.

While he scored an unbeaten 100 in his last Test, Love's omission comes as no surprise.

Brad Williams has again been selected in the expanded squad, this time as a cover for the injured Glenn McGrath.

McGrath recently underwent ankle surgery but selectors and team management are confident that he will be able to play.

Should he be ruled out, it is likely Andy Bichel will take his place in the starting XI.

Stuart MacGill has been named as the sole spinner in the squad.

The full squad is:
