Bond out, Astle may be fit
Wednesday, August 13 2003Top New Zealand pacer, Shane Bond will very likely miss the upcoming Test series in India due to lack of fitness. Bond is still recovering from a back stress fracture which he picked up in May against Sri Lanka.
Whilst Bond is expected to be able to bowl in the nets within the next two weeks, it would only be in short, easy spells. As such he would not have built back up the stamina which will be required to bowl the long spells which are almost mandatory on Indian pitches.
On the flip-side, Bond's New Zealand team-mate, Nathan Astle has begun rehab after his knee surgery which he under-went in April. Astle has had light net sessions recently and the New Zealand coaching staff is confident that he will be fit enough to participate in the Test series.
The 1st Test begins on the 8th of October at Ahmedabad.
