ECB Keeping Eye On Sri Lanka
Thursday, November 6 2003The ECB will continue to monitor the political unrest that has broken out in Sri Lanka less than two weeks ahead of England's tour.
Sri Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunga has suspended parliament, dismissed three senior ministers and ordered the army to guard key installations, including the state television station.
England are due to arrive in Sri Lanka on November 13 for three one-day internationals and three Tests, and the ECB is keeping a careful eye on the situation.
"We need to establish the full facts of what has happened in Sri Lanka," said John Read, the ECB's director of corporate affairs.
"We are keeping in close contact with the Foreign Office on the matter and we will see how it develops. I'm not going to speculate on the future of England's tour."
A Sri Lankan official insisted England are safe to play there. Ray Illangakoon, a spokesman for the Sri Lankan cricket board, said the whole country was "looking forward to the tour".
