WI v Zim : Day 2

Thursday, November 6 2003

Heath Streak got to his maiden Test hundred as he helped Zimbabwe to a mammoth 507/9 dec. Zimbabwe resumed on 284/6, with Streak on 16 and Taibu on 75. The latter was the first to go as he added just eight (8) runs to his overnight score before dragging on an off-cutter from Fidel Edwards.

At this stage, the score stood at 314/7 with West Indies having high hopes of wrapping the innings up for 350 or thereabout. Blignaut and his captain had other ideas. The two settled down and added a Zimbabwean record 168 runs for the eight wicket, passing the previous mark of 111. Blignaut went to his fifty off 86 balls before he was out to a blinding one-handed catch by Gayle off the bowling of Drakes for 91. Price was soon after hit in front to a full toss to give Edwards his second five-wicket haul in as many Tests. Zimbabwe then declared on 507/9, 12 runs later.

Streak's innings was epic. He was at the crease for just under three (3) hours, facing 264 balls and scoring 127 not out. He hit 12 fours while proving a rock for Zimbabwe. While Streak was at the crease, 274 runs were scored for the loss of only 3 wickets.

With the match heavily favouring Zimbabwe, Gayle and Hinds came out to face the new ball. They only had to play 2.4 overs though, before bad light forced an early close. Gayle stands unbeaten on 6, with Hinds yet to score. The West Indies are 11/0, 497 runs behind Zimbabwe's first innings total.
