ING Cup - VIC v QLD

ING Cup – Queensland v Victoria , at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Match 8 of the 2003/04 ING cup saw the Queensland Bulls pitted against the Victorian Bushrangers at the MCG.

Victorian skipper Cameron White won the toss & elected to field under overcast skies , he then made the unorthodox decision of opening the bowling with medium pacer Jon Moss , a move he was initially made to regret as Stuart Law took to Moss & fellow opener Matthew Inness.
Law holed out to deep midwicket off Moss for 24 , however this did not effect the run rate as the Bulls raced to 1/97 at the 20 over mark.
The introduction of medium pacer Andrew McDonald reaped instant rewards as he dismissed opener Danny Payne for a well made 52 (58 balls , 7 fours).
From this point on the Bulls struggled to build any momentum in their innings on a slowish wicket & against some tight bowling & committed feilding , captain White & Moss were both economical while Mick Lewis proved his worth with 2-33 from 10 tight overs.
An unbeaten 35 from 78 balls from Clinton Perren eventually steering the Bulls to a modest 7/212 , never the less , skipper Martin Love believed the total was defendable given the slow nature of the pitch.

Matthew Elliott & Jon Moss were slow initially , but soon made their intentions clear with an array of boundaries (including one spectacular six) from Shane Jurgensen.
By the time Moss was bowled off an inside edge for 47 (70 balls , 2 fours , 2 sixes) the home side had already reached 1/102 & were all but guaranteed of the victory.
Victoria’s two most accomplished batsman then added a polished 63 for the second wicket until Elliott threw his wicket away advancing to part time spinner Stuart Law for 89 (118 balls , 8 fours , 1 six).
Hodge then sealed the victory with an entertaining & unbeaten 50 (62 balls , 4 fours , 1 six) , despite the late loss of Andrew McDonald for 17 , the Bushrangers cruised to a 7 wicket win with relative ease.

They will take 4 points from this clash to move into third place on the ING cup ladder , while the Bulls remain 4th.

Summary – Victorian Bushrangers 3-215 (M.Elliott 89 , B.Hodge 50* , Hopes 1-36) defeated Queensland Bulls 7-212 (Payne 52 , Perren 35* , Lewis 2-33)
By 7 wickets at the MCG.
