NCL2: Somerset Lose Again
Wednesday, September 3 2003The result of the National League Second Division clash between Somerset Sabres and Lancashire Lightning at Taunton looked a foregone conclusion before it even started, and the obvious prediction was right.
The Sabres' bowlers were completely unable to stem the tide of runs that flowed from the visitors' blades and weren't help by a hand injury to left arm spinner Ian Blackwell. Mark Chilton hit 103, Carl Hooper 82 including five sixes, Stuart Law 51 off 36 balls and Chris Schofield 38* off 27. Nixon McLean picked up 3/61 but bowled six wides as the visitors ended up on 310/7 off their 45 overs - 6.88 an over.
Following that was always likely to be a tough ask for the hosts and at 45/4 and 87/5 another embarrassment looked in order, but Keith Parsons' 79-ball 90 and rapid cameos from Jason Hildreth (30), Aaron Laraman (33), Richard Johnson (22 off 14), Steffan Jones (19) and Nixon McLean (13*) ensured respectability by the time Glenn Chapple (4/60) bowled Jones with thirteen balls left and the total 286 to secure a 25-run win for the Lightning.
