Former Indian captain dies

Gulabrai Ramchand, 76 years old, passed away at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai tonight. The cause of death is said to be cardiac arrest. Ramchand captained India for five (5) Tests during the 1959/60 season.

Ramchand's captaincy reached it's peak when his Indian team beat Richie Benaud's Australians at Kanpur in 1959/60. This would prove the final series of his career, which India lost 2-1.

Overall, he played 33 Test matches and 1180 runs at 24.58. He also took 41 wickets at 46.31 apiece. Ramchand will be remembered as a powerful batsman and and a medium pace swing bowler. Ramchand managed the 1975 Indian World Cup team which toured England and was never afraid to speak his mind regarding the management and play of Indian cricket.
