ING Cup: Vics v Bulls

Saturday, November 1 2003

In an intense and exciting ING competition, the supremely talented Queensland Bulls side went one on one against the relatively young and inexperienced Victoria Bushrangers, captained by the young yet intelligent Cameron White.

Queensland got off to a solid start with Payne and veteran Stuart Law combining for a 65 run opening stand. Payne however fell first for 22, caught by Harwood off young Jonathan Moss' bowling.

Queensland skipper, Martin Love and the ever reliable Stuart Law put the pressure on the Bushrangers with some lovely strokeplay. Stuart Law registered another one day half century before he was dismissed by Moss for 55, as Moss picked up his second wicket.

Clinton Perren (5) and Carseldine (4) fell cheaply to Moss and White respectively. Love (39) soldiered on for Queensland, and with the score at 137, Love fell to Wise, caught by Roach.

Wade Seccombe and Nathan Hauritz tackled the death overs and timed their run assault perfectly to leave Queensland in a competitive position. Seccombe (50*) and Hauritz (39*) blasted runs at a run a ball to leave Queensland in the match, at 6/235 after their allocated 50 overs.

Victoria, were clear favourites to achieve the target despite their relatively inexperienced batting lineup. The experienced players however in Matthew Elliott, and Brad Hodge blew Queensland away after an early setback of Jonathan Moss (0).

The two blazed away with elegant, yet powerful strokeplay all around the wicket as Elliott and Hodge both registered their respective centuries. With the partnership exceeding 200, Hodge fell for a brave 107 to James Hopes. But the wicket was too late for Queensland, as Matthew Elliott's 117 not out guided Victoria to a fantastic ING win.

Brief Score Summary:

Queensland: 6/235 (Law 55, Seccombe 50*, Moss 3/52, Wise 2/34)

Victoria: 2/236 (Elliott 117*, Hodge 107, Dawes 1/42, Hopes 1/53)

Victoria won by 8 wickets
