Monday, October 27 2003Resuming on 237-2 on the morning of Day 3, Imran Farhat (123*) and Inzaman ul-Haq (16*) added 11 runs before Shaun Pollock dismissed ul-Haq LBW on 23 with the score on 248 in the second over the morning.
Three (3) runs were added before before Pollock dismissed Farhat on 128 caught by Peterson with the score on 251 two overs later.
Six (6) more runs were added before Makhaya Ntini dismissed Asim Kamal caught by his opening bowling partner Pollock for 1 with the score on 257. South Africa picked up three quick wickets and Pakistan were clearly on the back foot.
More joy for South Africa as next over as Pollock dismissed Shoaib Malik for 9 caught by Greame Smith with the score on 261. South Africa had picked up 4 runs for 24 runs inside 7 overs.
Ex-skipper Moin Khan and Abdul Razzaq added 32 runs for the seventh wicket inside 9 overs before Jacques Kallis made a breakthrough ruining any chances of a Pakistani revival. Khan made 18 when he departed with the score on 293 when he was caught by Herschelle Gibbs.
Another 16 runs were added before Pollock trapped Mushtaq Ahmed LBW with the score on 309. South Africa were clearly on top and Pollock had five wickets.
Makhaya Ntini made another breakthrough dismissing Abdul Razzaq on 37 with the score on 339 caught by sub Jacques Rudolph. Pollock soon had 6 wickets dismissing Danish Kaneria for 0 caught by captain Greame Smith with the score on 348 with a lead of 60 runs. Pollock had figures of 6-78. Shabbir Ahmed made a cameo 24.
In South Africa's second innings Greame Smith and Herschelle Gibbs added 42 before leg spinner Danish Kaneria trapped Gibbs LBW for 20.
Boeta Dippenaar joined his captain at the crease. Their partnership was 51 before Shoaib Malik trapped Dippenaar LBW for 21 with the score on 93.
Gary Kirsten came to the crease and added 35 runs before Shabbir Ahmed trapped Smith on 65 with the score on 128.
At stumps on Day 3 South Africa were 140-3 after 44 overs with a lead of 80 runs. Gary Kirsten was on 27 and Neil McKenzie on 0.
South Africa had gained the upper hand and the Test is in the balance.
