NSW v WA - ING Cup

Sunday, November 2 2003

North Sydney Oval was the scenic location for a great game of one-day cricket. Two of the glamour sides of the ING Cup came together to hopefully take away the four competition points, and the crowd would be in for a real treat with former and current Australian test and one day international players on hand.

W.A won the toss and decided to have a bat on what looked like a fine wicket.

The visitors got off to a slow start with Langer only making 15 (50) and Campbell departing 27 (37) meaning WA were in a spot of bother at 54-2.

Then came the W.A middle order to put NSW back in their place with some magnificent play making and shot selection with M Hussey scoring 106 (94) and C Rogers 75 (100) getting W.A back on track and to a competitive score.

M Goodwin come in down the order and showed some real hitting power with 34 (15), which pushed the visitors to a very competitive total of 280-5.

The pick of the NSW bowling was

D Nash 0 - 39 of 10, bowled very well and was unlucky not to have a couple of wickets early, S Katich 0 - 39 of 8 overs.

With the dark clouds forming nSW got of to a steady start with D Thornley the first to go for 17 (34), that brought S Waugh to the crease and he looked more determined than anyone to show the spectators and the selectors that he still has what it takes in the one day arena, and that he did with an unbeaten 101 (94).

At one stage the Duckworth/Lewis format was becoming a factor as both sides went off for rain and lost 9 overs, with the scores being reduced, NSW captain S Waugh was always on top of the situation.

He was well supported by S Katich 30 (28), P Jacques 27 (23) and M Slater 27 (20) but in the end it was S Waugh who got NSW over the line.

Man of the Match - Steve Waugh.

That win sees NSW on top of the table and shows why they have been ING Cup winners the past 3 years.
