Ind vs NZ: Day 2, Session 3
Friday, October 10 2003Just as the Test match looked as good as over for the New Zealanders, a small ray of light emerged shortly after the tea break in Ahmedabad.
Rahul Dravid was finally dismissed after racking up a mere 222 against an uninspiring New Zealand bowling attack, caught behind by Robbie Hart off Jacob Oram.
Sadly, however, that small ray of light was blocked out by a tiny figure: Parthiv Patel.
While Patel contributed only an unbeaten 29 from 24 deliveries, it was enough to rub salt into and already stinging New Zealand wound.
Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly compiled his 10th Test century after resuming the session on 75.
The skipper took a particular liking to the off-spin of Paul Wiseman before declaring as he reached an even 100 and the side 500.
In a dismal New Zealand bowling display, Daniel Vettori took 2/128 to have the best of the figures. Daryl Tuffey, Jacob Oram and Scott Styris took 1 wicket each.
The tourists woes continued as they began their first innings with an array of falling wickets.
Zaheer Khan's excellent display of seam bowling damaged the reputations and stumps of Mark Richardson and Stephen Fleming, while Patel's brilliant catch off the same bowler further nailed Lou Vincent's international coffin.
Nathan Astle (13*) and Scott Styris (10*) tensely negotiated the remainder of the day, leaving the visitors at 3/41 and India well in control heading into Day 3 tomorrow.
Progress Score: Stumps Day 2
India 500/5 dec. (R Dravid 222, S Ganguly 100*, VVS Laxman 64)
New Zealand 41/3 (Z Khan 3/16)
