Batty takes Surrey's top job

Friday, October 10 2003

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jon Batty has taken over as Surrey captain for the 2004 season following Adam Hollioake's decision that next season will be his last.

With Hollioake's decision, Surrey have attempted to smooth the transition for 29-year-old Batty, who will assume the number one wicketkeeper slot alongside opening the batting for 2004 following the retirement of Alec Stewart.

Batty enjoyed his best season to date in the Championship in 2003, hitting 794 runs in ten games at 52.93 including four fifties and two centuries including a career best 168*.

A regular first-choice who is not likely to be called up by England due to the quantity of talented young wicketkeepers in the county ranks - Read, Foster, Jones, Wallace, Ambrose, Mustard and Prior to name but seven - Batty seems the sensible choice for the armband.
