McGrath Ruled Out

Sunday, October 5 2003

Australia will start their first home Test series against Zimbabwe without pace spearhead Glenn McGrath, who has been ruled out with an ankle injury. Further news suggests he is in danger of missing the entire domestic summer.

At latest reports, McGrath has been ruled out for the entire Zimbabwe Test series and the triangular series in India later this month.

He will return to Sydney and sadly faces an extended stint on the sidelines, with the possibility of further surgery being needed.

McGrath had surgery on the ankle during the winter but during the week was declared an early starter after pulling up well from practice sessions in Sydney.

When he arrived on the harder Perth pitches however, he pulled up poorly and has decided not to risk the injury in the opening Test series of a gruelling 18-month schedule for the Australian side.

His injury allows Brad Williams a place in the 12, although it is likely he will continue his challenge on Andy Bichel's 12th man record.

Bichel is set to play in McGrath's place, with Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee likely to share the new ball on a helpful Perth wicket.
