Pakistan v SA, 5th ODI

Monday, October 13 2003

South Africa mixed a professional bowling effort with another fine innings from Boeta Dippenaar to get home to a 3-2 ODI series win over Pakistan. The right-handed Dippenaar capped off a fine series for himself with a solid 74 runs off 125 balls to guide his team to victory in the 5th One Day International.

That innings of 74 represented his second fifty in the series to go along with his maiden ODI hundred (110*) and capped off an aggregate of 256 runs at an average of 64.

Earlier in the game Pakistan were bowled out for a disappointing 192 in 49.3 overs. Indeed, it took a good middle and lower order effort to recover from 35/3 when Hameed was dismissed by Andre Nel. Hafeez (0) lasted just 7 balls before Nel disturbed his stumps, and former captain, Yousuf Youhana was trapped in front by Pollock 13 runs later without scoring. Captain Inzamam Ul-Haq (17) and Younis Khan (24) took the score to 75 before the former was dismissed in a less than unfamiliar fashion - run out. Shoaib Malik (20), Abdur Razzaq (38), Rashid Latif (25) and Mohammed Sami (22) all made useful contributions from then on in. Pollock ended with the best of the South African figures - 3 for 33 off 9 overs and 3 balls.

In reply, South Africa got off to a good start as Gibbs and Dippenaar added 75 runs in 19 overs before Kaneria had Gibbs stumped for 34. Not to be out-done, Kallis (40) helped added a further 93 runs for the second wicket. At his dismissal, the score stood at a pleasant 168/2 and the game and series stood all but secured for the Proteas. Sami ended up trapping Dippenaar adjacent 2 runs later, but Rudolph (13) and McKenzie saw (9) saw the last 23 runs on the board with little difficulty.

Pakistan started the series with a 2-0 lead through the first couple of games, but lost momentum and ended by losing three (3) straight to the tourists. To no one's surprise, Dippenaar won both the 'Man of the Match' and 'Man of the Series' awards.

The Test series between the two teams begins on the 17th of October at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
