Flowerless Zimbabwe

Wednesday, September 17 2003

For the first time since their inception to Test cricket, Zimbabwe will face a tour without Flower brothers Grant an Andy.

Over the weekend, middle-order batsman Grant broke his thumb playing in a domestic game for Mashonaland.

The injury is expected is in plaster for the next 6 weeks, and he will miss Zimbabwe's first Test tour to Australia, as well as possibly the home series against the West Indians.

Andy, meanwhile, retired from international competition following the World Cup and last week signed a lucrative contract for 2 more seasons with English county Essex.

As expected, Craig Wishart and Trevor Gripper were recalled for the Australian tour thanks to strong domestic form in the Logan Cup.

Craig Evans was also handed a long-awaited lifeline, bolstering the middle order in the absence of Flower. Gavin Ewing and Stuart Matsikenyeri are also notable inclusions.

Douglas Marillier has been left out of the squad, as had Barney Rogers.

The full squad is:
Heath Streak (c)
Tatenda Taibu (vc)
Mark Vermeulen
Trevor Gripper
Stuart Carlisle
Craig Wishart
Dion Ebrahim
Craig Evans
Stuart Matsikenyeri
Sean Ervine
Andy Blignaut
Gavin Ewing
Douglas Hondo
Ray Price.
