Mumbai v Rest of India:Day 1
Friday, September 19 2003A fiery Zaheer Khan, left Mumbai reeling with a sharp five wicket haul which gave the Rest of India team the definitive edge going into the second day of their Irani Trophy match.
Two star studded lineups were there to do battle, and with the anxious New Zealand camp looking on at some of the best cricketer's in India, Tendulkar's Mumbai vs Ganguly's India was the perfect exhibition for the Kiwi's to see Indian Cricket at its best.
Vinayak Mane and Wasim Jaffer started things off for Mumbai. With the score at 42/1, Mane fell to the experienced Sanjay Bangar, caught by Kumble for 21. Upcoming Mumbai batsman Nilesh Shetty (5) fell soon after to the ever improving Zaheer Khan as Virender Sehwag snapped up the catch.
Sachin Tendulkar strode out to his 'luckiest' ground in the world, as Tendulkar and Jaffer were left with somewhat of a recovery mission. As Tendulkar got his eye in, and played some confident strokes to the boundary, Jaffer (43) fell with the score at 91, and Tendulkar was left to anchor the recovery mission once again.
Tendulkar's mate and prolific Mumbai batsman, Vinod Kambli was out cheaply for 2, lbw to a superb Zaheer Khan delivery, and in the same over Indian all rounder Ajit Agarkar was caught by Patel off Khan's bowling which left Mumbai reeling at 5/98.
As Tendulkar blazed forward with attractive strokes through the covers and mid on, he found a valuable partner in experienced all rounder Sairaj Bahatule. Tendulkar and Bahutule comprised a partnership of a 149 runs, before Tendulkar was dismissed by the ever probing Zaheer Khan for a courageous innings of 94.
Bahutule reached his half century, but couldn't go on further as he was dismissed by Anil Kumble for 54. At stumps, Mumbai were 272/9. Join us tommorow for the second day's review, in what promises to be a very keenly fought and entertaining contest.
Goodbye for now.
