Windies whip Zimbabwe 'A'

Thursday, November 20 2003

Wavell Hinds helped the West Indies home to an easy victory over Zimbabwe 'A' today. The two teams were competing in an OD game, the only warm-up for the West Indies before the five-ODI series which starts this weekend.

Hinds took 3/35 from his 7 overs as he helped restrict Zimbabwe 'A' to 239/8 in their 50 overs. Doug Marillier (24), Craig Evans (6) and Sean Ervine (22) were Hinds' wickets as he used his gentle medium swing to good effect. Gayle (3/41) and young Ravi Rampaul (2/53) also were among the wickets.

For Zimbabwe 'A', Maregwede (69) and Barney Rogers (54) shared a 90-run partnership on which the innings was built.

With the bat, the West Indies saw few difficulties in achieving the target, as they lost only one wicket. A major worry however, was the dismissal of Chris Gayle, who was out slogging at Gary Brent for just 1. Upon his dismissal, Chanderpaul (64) and Hinds (69) added 144 for the second wicket, before they both retired "hurt" within 2 runs of each other.

This gave Marlon Samuels (51 not out) a chance to continue his good form, as he and Sarwan (39 not out) saw the tourists home by a comfortable 7-wicket margin.

The first and second ODI's will be played on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
