Sunday, November 23 2003Pura Cup – Queensland v Tasmania at the Gabba , Brisbane
Queensland went into game 9 of this seasons Pura Cup as heavy favourites , facing a Tasmanian side without a test cap between them.
Tasmanian skipper Daniel Marsh won the toss & elected to bat on a pitch which offered significant assistance to the new ball bowlers , a dour 50 run opening stand between Cox & Mason put the Tigers in the drivers seat early , Mason & Shane Watson were both failed to capitalize on starts , while Cox was bowled by Joe Dawes for 40 shortly after lunch , leaving the Tigers 3-110.

The Tigers all out for a modest 233 , still a competitive total on the benign pitch.
Starting their innings about an hour into day 2 , the Bulls suffered a night mare start , in form new ball bowler Damien Wright removing both openers for ducks , Stuart Law , Stephen Farrell & James Hopes all came & went without giving the scorers to much trouble , leaving the Bulls 5-41.
A 33 run stand between skipper Love & kepper Wade Seccombe added some respectability to the Queensland innings , Love falling to Wright for 28 as Queensland were eventually bundled out for 104 , Wright with 4-30 ensuring the national selectors will have to give his name serious consideration come VB series time.
Adam Griffith (2-26) & Andrew Downton (2-24) also bowled with venom on a rapidly deteriorating pitch.
Tasmania were never able to build any momentum in their second innings , loosing wickets at regular intervals to former Tasmanian Shane Jurgensen , only a scratchy 44 from Di Venuto & a superb 60 from Wright ensured the Tigers stayed on top , all out for 213 , Jurgensen 4-52 & MacKenzie 3-44 doing most of the damage.
However 343 was never going to be an easy total to chase.
Clinton Perren made his second duck of the match while Danny Payne (16) & Love (21) both failed to capitalize on their starts .
When Chris Simpson went for 4 the Bulls were 7-89 & staring down the barrel of a massive defeat , a combative 46 run stand between Steve Farrell & Damien Mackenzie added some respectability for the Bulls , Farrell making 49 from just 40 balls before driving on the up at Wright , Mackenzie was last man out for 30 , the Bulls all out for 168 , a massive 174 run loss.
