Olonga’s Career on the Ropes

Friday, February 28 2003

Henry Olonga is convinced his international cricketing career is now over following his exclusion from the Zimbabwean side for an injured player due to his stance against the Mugabe regime.

Olonga, the first black man to represent Zimbabwe on the cricket field, was excluded in favour of an injured Douglas Hondo.

Hondo has a groin strain and is medically unfit to play the match, yet he was chosen ahead of Olonga for the game against Holland.

Olonga hit world headlines two weeks ago for his courageous protest against the Mugabe regime in his home country of Zimbabwe.

His exclusion from the side comes on top of his sacking from his club, Takashinga Cricket Club, last week.

The talented paceman has confided in team-mate Andy Flower, stating that he feels his career is as good as finished in Zimbabwe.

His partner in the protest, Flower also looks certain to not play for Zimbabwe again following the World Cup.
