NSW Win ING Cup

Monday, February 24 2003

Brilliant displays from Steve Waugh, Simon Katich and Stuart Clark have seen New South Wales capture their third straight domestic one-day title.

Justin Langer won the toss for the Western Warriors and in a disastrous start the home team slumped to 5/65 after electing to bat.

Apart from Ryan Campbell’s 21, the Warriors top order was blown away by some excellent bowling from Stuart Clark, Nathan Bracken and a slightly wayward Doug Bollinger.

However Murray Goodwin and Kade Harvey then put together a solid stand before Goodwin was caught behind off Shawn Bradstreet for 31 from 57 balls.

Harvey was then joined by unheralded Peter Worthington, with the pair adding 56 before Bradstreet’s nagging line offered Brad Haddin his third catch of the innings with Harvey gone for a well-compiled 44.

Michael Clark then offered a valuable 27 at number 11 with the Warriors being bowled out for 207. Worthington was unbeaten on 49 following a mature innings from the all-rounder.

For the Blues, Stuart Clark took 3/34 after he bowled his 10 overs straight with the new ball, while Shawn Bradstreet was also economical with 2/33 from his 10.

Nathan Bracken took 2/35, Doug Bollinger 1/44 and Simon Katich picked up a wicket for his adopted state against his former state.

New South Wales then clobbered their way to victory, chasing down the required 208 in just 27 overs.

Brad Haddin emerged with all-guns-blazing, making 34 from just 18 balls, while Dominic Thornely made 10 from 13 balls before both fell victim to a pumped-up Brad Williams.

However, Williams blazing spell was no match for an astonishingly good Steve Waugh, who hammered 88 from just 55 balls in a truly masterful display of batting.

Williams did eventually get his man, caught down the leg side after he gloved a short ball to Ryan Campbell.

Former Warrior Simon Katich had the last laugh as he hammered former team-mate Michael Clark for 6 to hand New South Wales victory. He was unbeaten on 75 from 77.

For the Warriors, Williams took 3/55 as the Blues celebrated their third straight ING Cup title.
