Gillespie Ruled Out of Cup
Wednesday, March 5 2003Australian pace bowler Jason Gillespie has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa.
Gillespie, who has missed an amazing 125 of Australia’s last 175 ODI matches through injury, will take no further part in the tournament.
The South Australian will miss the Super 6 matches, a semi-final and possibly a World Cup final due to his latest setback in what has become an injury-prone career.
He has a torn tendon in his right foot which is affected when he lands to bowl, a crushing blow to the young fast bowler.
Australia have a ready-made replacement in Andy Bichel, with Brad Williams likely to earn his World Cup call in the next 24 hours ahead of Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark and Ashley Noffke.
Gillespie stated that he was “really disappointed” to miss the remainder of the tournament, with his place on the tour to the West Indies now under a cloud due to his fitness.
He will fly home to Australia within the next 24 hours.
