Bdesh captain Mashud quits

Wednesday, March 26 2003

Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud has resigned after a dismal World Cup campaign that included defeats to non-Test Nations Kenya and Canada, and their only points coming through a rain-affected non-result against the West Indies, costing the Caribbean side a place in the Super Six and probably Semi Final.

Bangladesh are set to play a triangular series with India and South Africa later this month, after which the South Africans will stay in the country for a Test Series.

Mashud, Bangladesh's most experienced International player with 16 Test and 57 ODI Caps, is likely to retain his place in the side as wicketkeeper, although it's never easy to second-guess an overly-politicised Bangladeshi Board.

Bangladesh, yet to win a Test and without an ODI win since their controversial World Cup 1999 victory over Pakistan, will need to name a stand-in captain before the first Tri-Series game on April 11.

Possible candidates include the experienced Akram Khan, Aminul Islam, Javed Omar, Habibul Bashar, Khaled Mahmud and Mohammad Rafique. Talented youngsters Alok Kapali and Mohammad Ashraful are also possibles for the role, but this is one spread I wouldn't want to lay a stake on.
