Otago beat Wellington

Friday, March 21 2003

Otago have beaten Wellington by nine wickets at Molyneux Park in the last round of the State Championship. Despite their loss, Wellington have finished in second place above Otago in third.

Otago won the toss and elected to field, this was a well justified decision as Wellington crumbled to 5-69. Chris Nevin and James Franklin provide the only partnership of any substance taking Wellington through to 137 before they were removed for 46 and 50 respectively. Wellington were dismissed in the 102nd over for 203. It was a polished bowling performance by Otago, with O'Connor starring taking 4-35 from 26 overs.

Otago began their innings impressively and were only two wickets down when they surpassed Wellington's total. Cumming made 114, and his opening partner Wasim scored a handy 65. Gaffaney continued his impressive season at number three with 72. Otago then lost wickets at regular intervals but never stopped scoring runs, finally being dismissed for 381- a first innings lead of 180. Matthew Walker was outstanding with the ball taking 6-114, bowling a mammoth 52.3 overs!

Wellington's second innings attempt to save the match was ruined by the brilliant O'Connor again. Only Lance Woodcock managed a decent score (80) but he too succumbed to O'Connor, who took nine wickets in the match, five of these being bowled or LBW. Wellington only slightly improved on their first innings total, making 244 and giving Otago just 65 to chase for victory.

Otago had a disastrous start to their innings, being 1-0 after Wasim was dismissed by Franklin for a duck. Otago however, never looked in any doubt after that moment, Gaffaney and captain Cumming steering Otago to victory in the 20th over.

Result: Otago won by nine wickets.
