WA Under Fire

Thursday, March 27 2003

Western Australian cricket is currently in a state of disarray following a difficult month at the WACA.

Last week, coach and former Australia batsman Mike Veletta was sacked after 2 disappointing seasons at the helm of the Western state.

His sacking follows mass speculation that key players Mike Hussey, Ryan Campbell and Matt Nicholson were all looking elsewhere for their home base next summer.

Hussey and Campbell are reported to have been chased by South Australia following their sacking for the state side for the last match of the 2002/03 season.

Meanwhile, Nicholson is said to be looking at a move back to his native New South Wales following an indifferent couple of seasons.

Brad Williams, meanwhile, is also said to be looking for a change of scenery despite his success at the WACA.

The former Test paceman, who was said to be close to moving back to the Blues at the end of last year due to limited opportunities in the West, is said to again be disenchanted by the system in place at the WACA following a season where he played just a handful of matches due to injury and selections.

Western Australia lost key batsman Simon Katich at the end of last season to New South Wales, potentially signaling the start of a mass exodus from the state.
