ICC withholds money

Tuesday, March 25 2003

The ICC has withheld NZ$4.57 million dollars from New Zealand Cricket because they forfeited their match scheduled in Nairobi against Kenya. The ICC believes that they will need the money to pay the Global Cricket Corporation, the ICC's television partners who would have screened the game.

New Zealand Cricket would have been paid US$9 million($NZ16.57 million), the amount which each test playing nation is awarded for participating in the World Cup.

It is a huge blow for New Zealand Cricket who are already stretched for cash, even more so now after the players strike. The contracts that were awarded to the top players were obviously with this sum from the World Cup in mind.

New Zealand Cricket is expected to seek arbitration in support of it's reasons not to play in Kenya.

Money has also been withheld from England, who forfeited their Pool A match against Zimbabwe for political reasons. It was already decided that India wouldn't recieve any money, because their players refused to sign World Cup contracts.
