Carib Cup Update
Sunday, March 30 2003The 2003 First Class season resumed today after a WIPA (West Indies Players Association) strike delayed the start of both Carib Cup semi-finals by a day.
In Bridgetown, Barbados skipper, Courtney Browne won the attack and inserted his Trinbagonian opponents. A careless batting display by the visitors left them struggling at 250/9 at the end of the days play. Captain Ganga led the Trinidad and Tobago batsmen with a classy 95, which consisted of 13 fours and a six. Star batsman Brian Lara also chipped in with a superb 37, before he carelessly threw away his wicket. This would be the order of the day as T&T, bar Ganga, showed a lack of focus in their batting.
Corey Collymore snatched 4/61 and left-armer Collins took 3/40. Left-arm unorthodox spinner, Dave Mohammed is 27 not out at the close of play.
T&T (first innings):- 250/9 (Ganga 95, Lara 37, Mohammed 28*; Collymore 4/61, Collins 3/40)
In Berbice, Guyana were put to the sword by the strong Jamaican batting. Young gun, Marlon Samuels led the charge with a stroke-filled knock of 79. He was ably supported by West Indies opener, Wavell Hinds (58) and Garrick (31).
At the end of the day, however, it would be allrounders Bernard Jr. (64n.o.) and Gareth Breese (62n.o.) who would take Jamaica onward to the strong position of 335/4 at stumps.
Jamaica (first innings):- 335-4 (Marlon Samuels 79, David Bernard 64 not out, Gareth Breese 62 not out, Wavell Hinds 58, Leon Garrick 31; Rayon Griffith 1-51, Carl Hooper 1-61, Neil McGarrell 1-64, Mahendra Nagamootoo 1-98)
Play continues at 10 a.m. Eastern Caribbean time, tomorrow.
