Gillespie In, Martyn Doubts

Saturday, March 29 2003

Australia has been dealt a bitter-sweet hand as they prepare for their tour of the West Indies, which they leave for on Monday.

Key fast bowler Jason Gillespie has been ruled fit for the tour following an 18-ball hit out in the nets yesterday, resuming his place in the squad.

Gillespie was in doubt following his premature return from the World Cup during the group stages but looks set to play in the first Test match.

Damien Martyn, however, has been dealt another blow with his broken finger.

He now looks likely to miss the first Test following the news that his broken finger is again worse than thought.

There are even doubts as to wether he will make the trip at all, with his place likely to go to Michael Clarke or Greg Blewett should he be ruled out of the squad.

If he is ruled out of just the opening Test match, Martin Love seems certain to start in his place while Darren Lehmann would be given the job of the number 4 position.

The squad leaves for the Caribbean on Monday.
