Pura Cup Final: Day 1

Friday, March 14 2003

New South Wales and Queensland have played out a tense days cricket on Day 1 of the Pura Cup at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Queensland captain Martin Love won the toss and predicably elected to bowl on a typical Brisbane green top.

Nick Kruger was making his debut for the Bulls, who had lost all-rounder James Hopes on the morning of the match to a virus.

New South Wales lost red-haired opener Greg Mail in just the second over of the morning when he was caught by Wade Seccombe from the bowling of swing bowler Adam Dale for 2.

However, former Test players Michael Slater and Simon Katich then put together 191 for the second wicket in trying conditions for the batsmen.

Both batsmen looked calm against the moving ball from an international-standard attack of Michael Kasprowicz, Adam Dale, Joe Dawes and Ashley Noffke.

Slater was the first of the pair to be dismissed when he caught by Clinton Perren off Kasprowicz after making an even hundred, his third of the domestic summer.

Test captain Steve Waugh then strode out to the crease to join Katich and returned for just 9 when he was trapped LBW to Joe Dawes.

Just three balls later, Dawes had his second victim when he this time trapped young gun Michael Clarke LBW for 0.

Katich then fell on the same score as Waugh and Clarke – 213 – when he was caught behind off Kasprowicz for a patient 82.

Brad Haddin then fell for 1, with Joe Dawes earning his third LBW of the innings.

When bad light stopped play, the Blues were at 6/223, with Mark Waugh not out on 1 and Don Nash undefeated on 7.

For the Bulls, Joe Dawes had 3/41, Michael Kasprowicz 2/79 and Adam Dale 1/41. West Indies tour hopeful Ashley Noffke was yet to take a wicket.

Scores:

New South Wales 6/223 (M Slater 100, S Katich 82, J Dawes 3/41)

Bad light stopped play, Day 1.
