Australian Test Squad Named
Monday, March 17 2003Brad Hogg has been rewarded for his excellent ODI performances of late with a call-up into the Test squad as second spinner behind Stuart MacGill.
Ashley Noffke has been selected as the fifth fast bowler after impressing selectors over the past summer for Queensland and Australia A.
The tour will signal the young Queenslander's return to the national squad following his selection as a replacement on the 2001 Ashes tour to England.
Darren Lehmann and Martin Love will battle out for the number 6 position following the non-selection of young gun Michael Clarke from the Pura Cup winning New South Wales side.
Love will be making his first overseas tour, while Lehmann will be making his maiden Test trip to the Caribbean following his One-Day selection there four years ago.
Jason Gillespie will be taken on the tour subject to his fitness following his early return home from the World Cup.
As expected, Steve Waugh was selected with the captaincy, allowing him to break Allan Border's record of 156 Test matches.
However, the vice-captaincy now sits with ODI skipper Ricky Ponting ahead of Adam Gilchrist.
The Tasmanian's elevation to the vice-captaincy seems logical due to the fact that he leads the One-Day side and is seen as the 'heir apparent' to current skipper Steve Waugh.
