Pura Cup Final: Day 3
Monday, March 17 2003Stephen Waugh’s New South Wales Blues have won the 2002/03 Pura Cup title following their 3-day victory at the Gabba.
New South Wales resumed day 3 at 4/166, with Waugh twins Steve and Mark left not out at the crease.
Mark was the first of the pair to be dismissed this morning, caught by Lee Carseldine off the bowling of Ashley Noffke for a typically classy 38.
The enterprising knock seems almost certainly the last in the distinguished career of the younger twin, who has graced crowds for many-a-summer with sublime stroke play set to retire from first-class cricket as a winner.
Brad Haddin then fell for 0, again to Noffke, when he edged to rival keeper Wade Seccombe first ball, potentially losing his battle for inclusion as the 16th player in the squad.
Captain Steve was the next wicket to fall when he was dubiously trapped LBW by former Test quick Michael Kasprowicz for a typically gritty 56.
Don Nash and Stuart Clark again made handy contributions of 22 and 32 respectively, with Joe Dawes removing both quicks.
Adam Dale then claimed the final scalp of Doug Bollinger for 3, leaving Stuart MacGill 10*.
For the Bulls, Joe Dawes took 3/64, M Kasprowicz 3/70, Brendan Nash 1/22 and Adam Dale 1/72. Violently-ill Australian hopeful Ashley Noffke took 2/19 from 5 overs.
Queensland, set a total of 462 for victory, were bowled out for 215.
In another poor batting display, Queensland’s 4th in as many innings against New South Wales, only Lee Carseldine troubled the New South Welshmen with 65.
Pura Cup player of the year Clinton Perren made just 16 before being yet again dismissed by his nemesis Stuart MacGill.
Nick Kruger with 34 and Adam Dale’s 33 were the only other real contributions for the Bulls, with Ashley Noffke unable to bat.
For the Blues, Stuart MacGill followed his first innings 5/16 with 3/43 in another commanding display of leg-spin bowling.
Simon Katich capped off a good match with 3/43, Greg Mail took 1/15, Don Nash 1/37 and Stuart Clark 1/45.
Find of the summer Doug Bollinger finished without a wicket in his 8 overs of left-arm pace.
