Pura Cup Final: Day 2

Saturday, March 15 2003

New South Wales look set to win the Pura Cup for the first time since 1992/93 following their excellent bowling display today.

The Blues resumed Day 2 at 6/223, with Mark Waugh the first man to go for his overnight score of 1, caught at first slip by Martin Love off Michael Kasprowicz.

Don Nash (34) and Stuart Clark with 27 formed a good lower-order partnership for the Blues until Joe Dawes removed both quicks, earning him 5 wickets for the innings.

Kasprowicz, giving the lion-hearted quick his 4th victim of the innings, then dismissed Doug Bollinger to leave the Blues all out for 282.

For the Bulls, Dawes finished 5/66, Kasprowicz 4/102 and Adam Dale with the wicket of Greg Mail.

The Queenslanders were then steamrolled for just 84 by a spirited Blues attack.

Don Nash snared the first 2 wickets of Nick Kruger (2) and Martin Love (2) to leave the final hosts at 2/11.

Doug Bollinger then dismissed Daniel Payne for 13 at the same score of 34 that Lee Carseldine fell to become Greg Mail’s first victim.

Stuart MacGill then came up with a brilliant burst, taking 5/16 with the wickets of his bunny Clinton Perren, Brendan Nash, Ashley Noffke, Michael Kasprowicz and Joe Dawes.

MacGill’s 5/16 were the best figures, complimented by 2/23 from Greg Mail, 2/9 from Don Nash and 1/23 from Doug Bollinger. Stuart Clark bowled seven wicket less overs for just seven runs.

New South Wales lost first innings century-maker Michael Slater for 2 in the first over when he was bowled by Michael Kasprowicz.

Greg Mail and Simon Katich then put together a solid partnership before Katich was dismissed by Joe Dawes for 36.

Mail was the next to fall for 47, becoming the first first-class victim of Brendan Nash’s 20-match career.

Michael Clarke then seemingly ended his West Indies chances when he was dismissed for 11 by Kasprowicz, his second failure in the biggest match of his domestic career.

Waugh twins Stephen and Mark are not out overnight, with the Test skipper unbeaten on 47 and Mark left on 20.

For Queensland, Kasprowicz has 2/53, Nash 1/22 and Dawes 1/59.

Ashley Noffke was unable to bowl due to a vomiting attack.
