Warne Cops 12 Months
Friday, February 21 2003Australia legend Shane Warne, Test Cricket’s second-highest wicket-taker, has been slapped with a 12-month ban from all forms of cricket following his positive drug test.
33-year-old Warne will now be ineligible to play any other form of cricket than in the backyard until February of 2004.
Warne has a seven day period in which he can call an appeal, which may be very likely in such a tight case.
The jury announced their decision this morning following the ajournment of the hearing yesterday evening.
The blonde Victorian will be unavailable for Australia in the series against West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, India and Sri Lanka as well as the World Cup.
The decision means he will be unable to captain Hampshire in this year’s county championship.
Shane is expected to make a public statement about the decision in the next 24 hours.
Either Stuart MacGill or Nathan Hauritz will replace Warne in Australia’s World Cup squad, with the replacement expected to be announced at some stage over the weekend.
