Windies name 14 for Guyana
Monday, April 7 2003The West Indies selectors named their squad of 14 for the 1st Test against Australia, in Guyana. A couple of notable omissions are those of Sarwan and Gayle. While Sarwan is injured, but expected to return for the 2nd Test, Gayle is serving a tentative suspension after opting to play for the West Indies in the current double-wicket tournament rather than for his home country, Jamaica in the Carib Cup Finals.
Three notable inclusions- Devon Smith is called up to a West Indies squad for the first time, after a very good domestic season at the top of the order; Carlton Baugh Jr. joins him as a young talented wicketkeeper-batsman from Jamaica. The third newcomer is Dave Bernard Jr. Bernard is an aggressive strokeplayer who has had a very impressive season with both bat and with the ball. In addition, Daren Ganga gets a Test recall after being sacked for over a year.
The vice-captain for the 1st Test is yet to be named.
The full squad is a follows:-
Brian Lara (captain); Carlton Baugh (Jr), David Bernard (Jr), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Pedro Collins, Vasbert Drakes, Mervyn Dillon, Daren Ganga, Wavell Hinds, Carl Hooper, Ridley Jacobs, Jermaine Lawson, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith
