Clarke Earns Call
Saturday, April 5 2003New South Welshman Michael Clarke has been called up by the Australian selectors to replace an injured Damien Martyn for the Test match tour in the Caribbean.
22-year-old Clarke was considered an unlucky omission from the original touring party of 15 following a good year in both first-class and one-day cricket.
The selection comes upon the back of his ODI debut against England in Adelaide during last summer's VB Series.
Clarke, a right-hand middle order bat and left arm finger spinner, has clearly been earmarked for higher honours by the selectors over recent summers following consistent selections in the Australia 'A' sides.
His selection, however, will more than likely see him as the reserve batsman with Darren Lehmann and Martin Love set to bat at number 4 and 6 respectively.
Clinton Perren will take Clarke's place in the Australia 'A' squad to battle South Africa 'A'.
Martyn, meanwhile, will miss the entire Test series against the West Indies and will face an examination before taking his place in the ODI squad for the tour.
Also, Glenn McGrath has confirmed he will miss the first Test of the Frank Worrell Trophy.
