Crawley to skipper Hampshire

Thursday, April 10 2003

It was widely reported that Shane Warne would become captain of Hampshire for 2003, but the Australian's one year suspension for a drugs offence scuppered that. Now, it has been confirmed that former Lancashire skipper John Crawley will step into the breach.

John Crawley captained Lancashire from 1999 until his acrimonious departure three years later following protracted contract wranglings. He started for Hampshire with a bang, registering a mammoth 272 against Kent which precipitated his recall to the England test side following a three year absence, and he finished the season with an average of 57.

No appointment of vice-captain has been made by the club. Crawley, 31, succeeds Robin Smith who is having a testimonial season this year.
