Wasim signs for Hampshire

Thursday, April 3 2003

Record-breaking Pakistani all-rounder Wasim Akram has signed a one-year deal with Hampshire to replace Shane Warne as their overseas player for 2003, after the Australian leg-spinner was banned from cricket for drugs offences.

Hampshire's initial choice for a replacement, the "Rawalpindi Express" Shoaib Akhtar, did not sign due to possible International commitments. Wasim, who is the only bowler with over 500 ODI wickets and also possesses a Test double century, will play at the Rose Bowl in 2003 alongside Australian top-order batsman and improving left-arm spinner Simon Katich.

"I was impressed by the enthusiasm and ideas shown by Hampshire and am delighted to join such a progressive county. For me it is a fresh challenge and a new chapter in my career. The aim is for Hampshire to gain promotion in both competitions this year and I hope to be able to play a part in that ambition", said Wasim in a statement on Hampshire's website.

Wasim enjoyed a successful decade at Second Division Championship rivals Lancashire from the late 1980s onwards.
