WI canter home despite Bashar 77
Tuesday, June 8 2004Despite a fighting innings of 77 from captain Habibul Bashar, the West Indies fairly cantered home to an innings victory over Bangladesh today at Sabina Park. Pedro Collins proved the inspiration, capturing a career-best 6/53 as Bangladesh collapsed from 154/3 to 176 all out.
The tourists started the day at 66/3, needing 209 runs to make the West Indies bat again. The overnight batsmen, Bashar and Manjural Islam Rana scored quickly and put on 88 runs in 20 overs until the latter was caught by Lara off Banks for 35. The first ball of the following over, Collins had Bashar LBW. His 77 runs took 96 balls and featured some 9 fours.
Mushfiqur Rahman (0) lasted 4 balls and was caught by Dwayne Smith off Collins. Banks then had Mashud (0) caught by Sarwan to end a streak that saw Bangladesh lose 4 wickets for just 1 run - 155/7. Mohammad Rafique (2) and Tapash Baisya (3) were also casualties of the left-arm seam of Collins, and Sarwan ended the game with the wicket of Ashraful.
The West Indies, winners by an innings and 99 runs, won the series 1-0. Ramnaresh Sarwan was named a deserved Man of the Match and Man of the Series for his 8 wickets and 301 runs in the 2 Tests.
