Trescothick Ton boosts England
Sunday, June 6 2004A fine century from Somerset opener Marcus Trescothick helped England to dominate the afternoon of the first day's play before two Scott Styris wickets brought the game back into the balance.
Resuming overnight on 351-6, New Zealand had added just four, and Chris Cairns none to his 41, when he tamely cut Steve Harmison to Andy Strauss at point. Brendon McCullum (54) and Dan Vettori (35) then added an important 54 for the eighth wicket before Matthew Hoggard finally struck.
The Yorkshire seamer got one to come back into McCullum, who was bowled through the gate and off his pad, before collecting Tuffey in his next over, leg-before playing all around a straight one with no further score. With Chris Martin in at 11, Vettori attempted to up the ante and moved away to drive Harmison (4-74) only to miss the ball and be comprehensively bowled, the last three wickets all falling on 409.
In reply, England's openers constructed another impressive stand as both men made fifties before Andrew Strauss (62) got a leading edge trying to sweep Vettori and was taken comfortably by Tuffey at mid-wicket. Mark Butcher struggled to settle and was trapped leg before by the same bowler for just seven.
Meanwhile, Trescothick was imperious as he cut, drove and pulled his way to 132, his sixth Test century, including nineteen fours before Styris returned late in the day to despatch Vaughan, caught at slip by Fleming to one that found some extra bounce, and Trescothick (following an interruption for bad light), who bottom-edged a shooter on to his own stumps, before Andy Flintoff and Graeme Thorpe stayed through to stumps with the score on 248-4.
