Blignaut, Ervine Confirm Futures
Saturday, June 5 2004The exodus of the 15 Zimbabwean rebels took further steps this week as all-rounders Andy Blignaut and Sean Ervine signed to play domestic cricket in Australia for 3 and 2 years respectively.
Blignaut – a former male model – adds fire to the Tasmanian bowling attack upset by the loss of Gerard Denton and Shane Watson, while also bringing his noted hitting power to the Tigers middle and lower order.
Seen as an ideal replacement for key Tiger Watson, Blignaut has claimed 5 wickets in a Test innings 3 times as well as being dismissed in the nineties on 2 occasions. While his ODI career figures do not flatter, his excellent fielding and strong arm account for an ideal package in the shorter form of the game.
Ervine, meanwhile, became the first of the rebels to leave Zimbabwe on a permanent basis when he moved to Perth a few weeks back to be with his girlfriend. Since his move it was only a matter of time before the finalisation of his playing contract for summers 2004/05 and 2005/06 with an eye to permanent residency and a Baggy Green Cap.
He links up with former Zimbabwean batsman Murray Goodwin at the WACA, while Andy Flower will continue his career with South Australia over the coming summer.
