Tiger Money Lures Bevan
Saturday, June 5 2004The Tasmanian Tigers have won the battle for the services of former Australian batsman Michael Bevan, with the 34-year-old left-hander agreeing to a 2-year deal with the state.
Bevan - axed by Cricket Australia in April - was offered top billing and the job of state second XI coach in Tasmania, a far more lucrative offer than what could be tabled by New South Wales following the announcement of Matthew Mott as the second XI coach.
Bevan's departure from New South Wales, where he has played his first-class cricket for 14 years, leaves a gaping hole in the middle order already ravaged by the retirements of Steve and Mark Waugh as well as the thriving international commitments of Simon Katich and Michael Clarke.
He leaves the state as the all-time leading first class run scorer in the Blue cap after surpassing Alan Kippax's long-standing record.
The possibility of Bevan returning to the county scene this winter also looms following rumours of a deal with first division county Kent.
