Durham v Yorkshire, Chester-le-Street
A stroll by the Riverside for the Tykes

A comprehensive all-round performance saw Yorkshire finish off Durham with a minimum of fuss within three days at Chester-le-Street yesterday.

Resuming at 156-4 in their second innings to add to a healthy lead on first innings of 181, Yorkshire soon lost Michael Lumb for a duck, but Australian test star Darren Lehmann simply cut loose against a strangely lacklustre Durham attack.

Lehmann totally dominated a partnership of 141 with the Tykes' skipper, Craig White's contribution to the partnership being a mere 31, before Lehmann departed for 120, an innings which bristled with 17 boundaries and 3 sixes.

Yorkshire's next four wickets were frittered away for the addition of a further 47 runs, and by the time Shoaib Akhtar rearranged the furniture of Simon Guy, Durham's victory target was an astronomical 535.

Such a mammoth target requires a huge platform, and Durham didn't build one. Skipper Jonathan Lewis blazed three quick boundaries in his 14 before being dismissed by Kirby, and with Gordon Muchall struggling to make any impression, the home side found themselves adrift on 23-2.

To their credit, Marcus North and Paul Collingwood battled long and hard against the inevitable, putting together a stand of 119 in the next two hours. When North departed, bowled by Kirby for 59, it signalled the beginning of the end.

Turning to a spin attack, Yorkshire rattled through the remainder of the Durham innings in little more than two hours. Former England test player Richard Dawson impressed once again, picking up 4 wickets to add to the 5-40 he had accumulated in the first innings, Lehmann took one and Craig White, doing his best Phil DeFreitas impersonation, bagged the wickets of Breese and Pratt as Durham subsided to 214 all out.

Yorkshire 331
McGrath 126, Wood 55, Shoaib Akhtar 4-64
and 353-9 dec
Lehmann 170, Wood 71, Jaques 53, Davies 3-51
Durham 150
Dawson 5-40
and 214
Collingwood 65, North 59, Dawson 4-75

Yorkshire won by 320 runs

Essex v Hampshire, Chelmsford
Wickets tumble at Chelmsford

Whereas day 1 saw the visitors chugging along quite merrily to 306-7 at stumps, the second day witnessed so much to-ing and fro-ing between the square and the pavilion that the groundsman might well have to re-turf lest the local council designate it a footpath.

Hampshire eked out a further 47 runs in losing the last three wickets with Shaun Udal undefeated on what, in the context of the match, is likely to prove a highly significant 43*. Darren Gough did the damage, snagging all three to finish with 5-57 as Hampshire ended on 357 all out.

Christopher Tremlett did much of the damage when Essex came out to bat, picking up 4-29 from 16 overs. Mascarenhas and Shane Warne picked up a couple apiece and only Aftab Habib (42) and James Middlebrook (30*) offered much resistance as from start to finish, Essex lasted less than four hours in making just 158.

When Hampshire started their second innings, Kenway and Brown lost no time in making progress against the new ball, adding 55 in barely an hour. The introduction of Danish Kaneria and Michael Clarke put the skids under the visitors though, and five wickets tumbled in the next 45 minutes as Hampshire struggled to 81 at the close.

Hampshire 353
Crawley 97, Clarke 69, Pothas 57, Gough 5-57, Danish Kaneria 4-108
and 81-5
Pothas 9*, Taylor 6*, Danish Kaneria 3-36
Essex 158
Tremlett 4-29

Glamorgan v Leicestershire, Cardiff
Maddy 145 keeps Leicestershire in the hunt - just

A remarkable innings of 145 by Darren Maddy kept Leicestershire just about within sight of Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens yesterday.

Starting on 46-3, still 287 in arrears, Leicestershire lost Henderson for 15 after half an hour's play and set them well and truly on the back foot. A partnership of 52 between Maddy and John Sadler got Leicestershire properly up and running, but despite Maddy's best efforts he was unable to bat at both ends.

Harrison, Cosker and Croft bagged three wickets apiece as Glamorgan continually chipped away at one end to such an effect that Leicestershire were reduced to 194-9 when Dagnall departed. For the next three quarters of an hour, Mark Cleary dug in and the pair added an oh-so-valuable 61 runs before Maddy himself went, caught by Powell off the bowling of Cosker.

Maddy's 145 contained 20 boundaries and three sixes, and came while the rest of the Leicestershire side were contributing 110 between them as the innings closed on 255, a deficit of 78..

Mark Wallace and Matthew Elliott added 52 in rapid time for the first wicket when Glamorgan started their second innings before Dagnall struck, bowling Elliott for 42. DeFreitas grabbed two wickets as the home side slumped to 96-5 before an unbroken stand of 61 between Jonathan Hughes and Robert Croft saw the lead resuming healthier proportions.

Glamorgan 333
Maynard 114, Gibson 5-80, DeFreitas 3-44
and 157-5
Hughes 29*, Croft 29*
Leicestershire 255
Maddy 145, Cosker 3-40, Harrison 3-49, Croft 3-70
