Zim Tests suspended till year-end
Friday, June 11 2004The Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) has agreed to cancel all of the country's Test matches for the rest of the year, ahead of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) annual meeting this month, which would have decided it's future.
The decision was made during a meeting between the two bodies, plus the heads of cricket boards of India, Australia and South Africa, in Dubai. Confirming the suspension, the ICC has welcomed the move.
Zimbabwe had only four Tests scheduled for the remained of the year, two in Pakistan in October, and two against England at home. They, however, will continue to play One-Day International cricket during this time period. What this decision does is take a considerable wrath off the ZCU, thus putting the entire issue on a lower preference for the ICC annual meeting.
Zimbabwe's troubles started when Heath Streak, the former captain, was sacked by the board, following the former's complaints of the selection panel, and subsequent demands. Fourteen other white players went to strike after Streak's dismissal, before Sri Lanka and Australia's tour of the country, eventually to be fired by the board.
