CC1: Butcher solo effort not enough
Sunday, May 16 2004Birmingham: Warwickshire v Surrey
Butcher's battle not enough
Mark Butcher and Graham Thorpe proved their form ahead of Thursday's First Test against New Zealand as they added 178 for the third wicket, eventually in vain, as Dewald Pretorius, Dougie Brown and Neil Carter made short work of the middle order.
When Thorpe fell for 89, Surrey were 120 ahead with seven wickets remaining, but inexplicably, the last seven all fell for the addition of just 50 more runs with the magnificent Butcher (184) and Martin Bicknell (21) the only players to make double figures.
Warwickshire's reply was then spearheaded by Nick Knight (62*) and ably supported by Carter, Mark Wagh, Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott as they easde home at over five an over to deepen the Oval Crisis.
Warwickshire 546
GB Hogg 158, MP Bicknell 4-130
Surrey 302
JN Batty 92*, AF Giles 3-55
Surrey 414
MA Butcher 184, NM Carter 3-39

Bristol: Gloucestershire v Northamptonshire
Northants kill the game
A glorious summer's day at the Ground was met with dead bat after dead bat as Northants, realising they had little feasible chance of victory, settle for a day-long net.
Shoaib Malik took three wickets as Usman Afzaal and Gerard Brophy added fifties to Tim Roberts and Martin van Jaarsveld's half-centuries yesterday, whilst Johann Louw batted over 3 hours for 34*.
Shoaib Malik took 3-109 off 45 overs of off-spin, and Phil Weston collected Brophy as only his fifth first-class wicket, just before everyone got so bored that they agreed the draw.
Northamptonshire 218
U Afzaal 63, JMM Averis 6-32
Gloucestershire 474
CM Spearman 139, BJ Phillips 5-106
Northamptonshire 427-7
M van Jaarsveld 84, Shoaib Malik 3-109
Gloucestershire (12pts) drew with Northamptonshire (6pts)
