Fleming to play first Test

Friday, May 14 2004

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, will take part in the first Test against England at Lord's, despite a groin injury.

As reported yesterday, a groin injury which first troubled Fleming back in November 2003, flared up again this week, causing him to miss New Zealand's on-going warm-up match against Kent.

While the groin strain still persists causing acute discomfort, Fleming is expected to take part in the action at Lord's next week, contrary to earlier reports.

Kiwi coach John Bracewell, when asked about Fleming's status, said, "Yes. I think it's been over-dramatised a bit. He's not playing against Kent as a precaution, to give our physio a chance to work on his groin strain."

Fleming had taken a cortisone injection before leaving for England, as a precautionary measure, against possible aggravation of the injury.
