Averis six-for sets hosts up
James Averis took career-best First Class figures of 6-32 as Northamptonshire were skittled for 218. Things could have been even worse but for a resolute stand of 87 for the seventh wicket between Usman Afzaal (63) and Johann Louw (26*).
Shoaib Malik picked up 2-30 but Shabbir Ahmed was hugely disappointing, contributing 27 to the extras column with a wide and 13 no-balls in his 16-over spell that cost 78 runs.
Gloucester further re-inforced their superiority as Craig Spearman struck 53* as they eased to 93-0, just 125 behind, at the close of play.

Lancashire collapse but Anderson strikes back
Only Mal Loye's unbeaten 59* saved Lancashire from embarrassment against Worcester as five bowlers each took two wickets. Loye, who retired hurt at 19-1, returned at 117-6 to score 55 of the last 70 runs and guide the hosts to 187 all out, Gareth Batty cleaning up the tail.
Worcester's reply wasn't without difficulty either, as James Anderson bowled both Stephen Moore and Graeme Hick cheaply, and just as the early storm seemed to have been ridden, Gary Keedy snared Stephen Peters (41) and Ben Smith (23) in his four-over spell at the end of the day.
Lancashire 187
MB Loye 59*, GJ Batty 2-9
Worcestershire 77-4
SD Peters 41, G Keedy 2-4

Bad to Worse for Surrey as Brad Hoggs the limelight
Surrey's increasingly difficult year took a further turn for the worse at Edgbaston, despite having reduced Warwickshire to 71-3 early on. Half-centuries from Jonathan Trott (61) and Jim Troughton (77) steadied the Warwickshire ship before Australian all-rounder Brad Hogg hit a run-a-ball 69 including ten fours to put the Bears firmly on top.
Warwickshire 358-6
JO Troughton 77, GB Hogg 69*, Saqlain Mushtaq 3-77
